Disodium sulphide - Production method

Sodium tetrasulfide is prepared from sodium hydrosulfide and sulfur.

Put a dry 150mL flask with a branch pipe on the reflux condenser and drying pipe. Temporarily close the branch pipe for later use. Add 50mL of anhydrous ethanol and 2g of small pieces of metal sodium to remove the oxide layer, and all the metal sodium is dissolved in ethanol to generate sodium alkoxide. Insert a catheter through the branch pipe, insert it all the way to the bottom, and introduce dry hydrogen sulfide gas to make it saturated. At this time, NaHS is generated. Add 4  17g of prepared sulfur powder, mix evenly, heat and boil in a water bath for 1h, and introduce N2 gas without O2. The solution turns dark red, indicating that Na2S4 is generated. Evaporation and concentration at 40°C in a vacuum, that is, yellow Na2S4 is precipitated. Suction and filtration with a glass sand core funnel, washing with absolute ethanol several times, drying, and drying in a P2O5 dryer for a long time to remove the adherent ethanol.
